The Vision
The City of Discovery Campaign leads the way in positively transforming the image of Dundee locally, nationally and internationally, ensuring that a more accurate perception of the city as a vibrant, attractive, flourishing location is held by residents, visitors, the business community and potential investors.

Campaign Activities
The City of Discovery Campaign was established in 1987 with the return to Dundee of the Royal Research Ship (RRS) Discovery, on board which Captain Scott sailed on his first expedition to the Antarctic. The RRS Discovery has played a key role in helping to change the perception of Dundee from that of a decaying, post-industrial city into a modern cultural and economic centre.

The campaign has been instrumental in securing events and developing a number of initiatives which have helped to raise the city’s profile and to stimulate the regeneration of its economy. Events such as the opening of Discovery Point, the Kellogg Cycle Tour coming to the city, the staging of the World Offshore Powerboat Championships and the Ultra 30’s sailing competition attracted national and international media attention.

In 1999, the efforts of the campaign were recognised when it secured the Royal Mail Scottish Marketing Award. Ongoing initiatives such as the Dundee Festival, the Dundee International Book Prize, the City of Discovery Campaign Business Breakfast series, Radio One's Big Weekend and the Dundee Flower & Food Festival, which last year attracted 25,600 people, have been great successes and a series of upcoming events are contributing to a renewed air of confidence in Dundee.

PR
The City of Discovery Campaign has a wide-ranging remit and as a media-led initiative its focus is on activities which can contribute to a better image of Dundee being presented in newspapers and on television and radio. The campaign employs a PR agency to ensure that positive messages about the city can be put forward in an effective and professional manner. Any PR queries or comments should be directed to the contact below.

Branding
The campaign has enjoyed a great deal of support from the business community in Dundee over the years with many companies adopting the logo and promoting positive messages about the city. The campaign also funds the production of a variety of marketing tools including literature and branded merchandise. As well as using these at conferences, exhibitions and other local and national events, City of Discovery merchandise has travelled to countries as far apart as Estonia, Japan, Dubai and Australia to further promote the city’s brand. Merchandise and conference bags are available from the contact below.

Campaign Committee
The campaign is run by a committee chaired by Lord Provost John Letford and includes representatives of Dundee City Council, Scottish Enterprise Tayside, Angus & Dundee Tourist Board, CCAG, Dundee & Tayside Chamber of Commerce, Dundee Contemporary Arts, Dundee University, Abertay University, The Overgate, Destination Dundee and Vist Scotland.
