CAMPAIGN HELPS DUNDEE CHILDREN DISCOVER WORLD OF ROBOTS
The City of Discovery Campaign has announced its sponsorship of the City of Discovery Robolab Challenge.
Local primary schools have been invited to enter teams of four youngsters who will be asked to build and programme a robot using the Lego Mindstorms equipment and Robolab software.
Teams have been invited to a short “practice” session, before three zonal finals are held on April 27th at Craigie High, May 18th at Baldragon Academy and May 25th at Menzieshill High.
Two teams from each zonal final will qualify for the city final, to be held at Sensation on June 7th. The winners will receive the City of Discovery Robolab Challenge Trophy .
Lord Provost John Letford, Chairman of the City of Discovery Campaign, said: “Working with new technologies, inspiring the imagination of our young people and encouraging them to work together towards a common goal, the Challenge is an event we are delighted to be involved with.”
“Alongside the City of Discovery Picture Book Award , and the Campaign’s work in attracting Radio 1’s One Big Weekend, it shows that we are working hard to ensure that the young people of our city are involved in the Campaign.”
Councillor Kevin Keenan, Convener of Education said: “This programme helps children understand ‘control technology’ which in turn leads to discussion about how this is a part of our everyday lives, through things like traffic lights, ATMs, and hospital equipment.”
“The Robolab Challenge is excellent for promoting logical thinking, trial and error testing, and encouraging social skills such as discussion, compromise and team working and it fits in perfectly with the 5–14 curriculum.”
